DEAN, LOEWENBERG SCHOOL OF  NURSING


The University of Memphis invites applications for the position of Dean of the Loewenberg School of Nursing (LSON).

The Loewenberg School of Nursing, an academic unit of The University of Memphis, is committed to advancing health through excellence in nursing education, research, and service.

The Loewenberg School of Nursing offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing.  The undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing prepares students for careers in professional nursing.  The graduate programs prepare professional nurses to practice in advanced nursing roles.  The graduate programs lead to the Master of Science in Nursing with concentrations in (1) Nursing Administration, (2) Nursing Education, and (3) Advanced Practice Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner).

Responsibilities:

The Dean of the Loewenberg School of Nursing (LSON) serves as chief academic officer of the School and reports directly to the Provost.  The Dean is responsible for all the academic programs and operational functions of the School.  The Dean's responsibilities include:

  • promoting the Vision, Mission and Values of the University through the activities and programs of the LSON.
  • providing effective leadership and advocacy for the LSON programs and faculty within the University community and the community at large.
  • developing and articulating a compelling vision for the LSON and the demonstrated ability to put this vision into practice.
  • overseeing the development, assessment and revision of academic programs.
  • enhancing the LSON's reputation locally, nationally, and internationally through the support of scholarship activities.
  • working with health care leaders and professionals, and to represent the LSON and the University in that environment
  • budgeting and resource allocation for the LSON.
  • securing external resources to support the LSON's mission
  • supporting and fostering diversity within the LSON

Qualifications:
In addition to a master's degree in nursing and earned doctorate in nursing or a related field, and eligibility for licensure in the state of Tennessee , candidates must demonstrate: 

  • established administrative strengths and abilities, including: constructive problem solving, commitment to faculty development, and collaborative and accessible leadership style.
  • an outstanding record of scholarship, teaching and service that is consistent with a senior-level appointment LSON.
  • the ability to manage budgets and resources
  • a commitment to promoting diversity among the faculty, staff and student populations.
  • effectiveness in interpersonal relations, including the ability to initiate and sustain interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • openness to faculty, staff and student views. 
  • a commitment to building community relations and securing external funds.
  • ability to embrace technology in support of the LSON's educational, clinical and research enterprises.

Dr. Nan Lackey, the Chair of the Search Committee, will accept applications until the position is filled, but the screening of applicants will start March 13, 2006 .  Each application package should include a letter outlining the applicant's qualifications for the position, a current curriculum vita, two letters of recommendation and any other supporting documentation.  Packages should be sent to:
