HEALTH CARE

 

  • Mission: To support the health care delivery system, be a resource for health-related policy decisions, and work to improve health indices in Memphis.
  • Rationale: Memphis is the home of the largest and most critical health care delivery system of the region. The health needs of the area are enormous, as indicated by both local and national studies.
  • Role: The role of the University of Memphis is to provide training for health care professionals, provide research to support health care policy decisions, and to be actively involved in prevention and intervention programs.
  • Central University Units: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Fogelman College of Business and Economics, College of Fine Arts and Communication, Loewenberg School of Nursing, School of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology
  • Core University Programs: Current health care initiatives are centered in the following programs and centers:

Health Administration Program

Center for Healthcare Economics

Center for the Study of Rhetoric and Applied Communication

Child Health Data Consortium

Department of Health and Sport Sciences

Department of Psychology

Loewenberg School of Nursing

School of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology

  • Goal: The final steps of starting a MPH (Masters in Public Health) are being completed with the goal being to establish a School of Public Health in partnership with UTHSC. This could be a consolidating unit for many of the present health related activities and a substantial source of funding.
  • External Funding: Funding for prevention research and intervention activities comes from national sources (e.g., NSF and NIH). Funding for program development and support services come from local foundations and health care delivery institutions.
  • Outside Partners: Local foundations, Memphis hospitals, UTHSC.
