The Biological Safety Committee shall be responsible for the following functions:
- Governing the development and implementation of the University Biosafety Program;
- Reviewing the Biosafety Program on an annual basis;
- Authorizing recombinant DNA protocols requiring approval, and
- Recommending appropriate corrective actions for individuals or departments violating applicable statutes, codes, regulations, or internal policies and procedures.
Meetings: The Biological Safety Committee shall meet at least annually and as necessary to carry out the duties of the committee.
Composition: Committee members shall be appointed by the President based on their knowledge and experience with biological agents. The committee shall consist of at least six (6), but not more than nine (9) members so selected that they collectively have experience and expertise in recombinant DNA technology and the capability to assess the safety of recombinant DNA research and to identify any potential risk to public health or the environment. At least two (2) members shall not be affiliated with the institution (apart from their membership on the Committee) and who represent the interest of the surrounding community with respect to health and protection of the environment. In addition, the Committee shall include at least one (1) individual with expertise in plant, plant pathogen, or plant pest containment principles and at least one (1) scientist with expertise in animal containment principles. The Manager of Environmental Health and Safety shall serve as an Ex-officio member.
Reports to: The Biological Safety Committee reports to the Vice Provost for Research.
Annual Report: An annual report should be submitted by July 15 of each year.
