Academic Principles
- Every department should have defined areas of focus that are supported by faculty groups. Where appropriate, those areas of focus should tie to the University's areas of foci.
- Every faculty member should have his/her own workload profile. Research-active faculty members should, in general, have reduced teaching loads. Those who do not have active research programs should have increased teaching/service loads.
- We continue to emphasize persistence to graduation as a major indicator of success. This far outweighs the number of majors in the discipline, a more ephemeral measure.
- Every department should have established a culture for conducting research and/or creative activities. Our core belief is that exposure to research-active faculty and participation in research programs are critical components of our students' educational experiences.
- We should minimize the use of part-time instructors as much as possible and encourage tenured and tenure-track faculty members to take the lead on teaching undergraduate classes.
